What a verified chain tells you

Integrity, external checkpoints and signer identity answer different questions.
Three distinct questions
Digest links detect inconsistencies within the chain. A previously trusted external head is needed to detect tail removal or a completely recomputed history.
A signature identifies a signing key under a verification policy. It does not prove that a test passed, or independently establish when another party observed the head.
